Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Te Korowai o Mihiwaka
Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki is closely involved with supporting the Otago Natural History Trust in its development of the 307 hectare Orokonui Nature Reserve, near Waitati.
The Runaka is represented on the Trust by Barbara Moerhuis who was elected as the Runaka representative at the Runaka Triennial meeting in 2006. Rosemary Clucas was our initial representative but she stood down to concentrate on her PhD study.
The Runaka was recently recognised by the Otago Natural History Trust as an Honorary Life Member. The Runaka has been actively supporting the Trust in its endeavours to reintroduce native flora and fauna to the sanctuary including harakeke (native flaxes), Kakaruai (Robins), Lizards, Kiwi, Tuatara and Kaka.
The Runaka is also working towards placing a pouwhenua in the Ecosanctuary within the next 2 years. To learn more about Te Korowai o Mihiwaka, Orokonui Ecosanctuary go to www.orokonui.org.nz
