About

Matariki at the Marae is an evening celebrating the presence of the constellations of Puaka and Matariki in our skies.

This special event would usually be held to coincide with the arrival of Puaka and Matariki but the after effects of the earthquake in Christchurch on 22nd February 2011 were experienced even in tranquil Karitane and caused Matariki at the Marae to be held at the slightly later time of 8 and 9 July 2011.

Included in this year’s Matariki at the Marae is a short production by Karitane School about Papatuanuku plus a spectacular Wearable Arts Competition with entrants showing their work on the runway.  Individual category winners and the Supreme Trophy are to be awarded.

The objectives of Matariki at the Marae are to:

  1. Encourage and showcase creativity
  2. Build knowledge of Puaka and Matariki
  3. Bring the community together over the winter period
  4. Offer a unique cultural experience.

This show can't happen without the support of sponsors.
