Karitane School Performance

Papatuanuku, Mother Earth, Takaroa, Guardian of the Sea and Rakimui, Sky Father.  It is their story of how the world was created that was inspiration for Karitane School's performance.

Kai Tahu legend says that Papatuanuku and Takaroa had a family.  Takaroa took their child's placenta and went looking for the right place to bury it.  While he was away Rakinui and Papatuanuku partnered and had many children.  When Takaroa finally returned he was very angry.  He badly wounded Rakinui who became very ill.  Takaroa returned to the sea and Rakinui was able to return to Papatuanuku.

Their children began to be born unwell because of Rakinui's wounds.  Takinui asked his son Tane to lift him up above his children, with Papatuanuku below, so that the sunlight would fall on his children.

Tane used trees and shrubs to cloth Papatunauku and red feathers for Rakinui.  The feathers would only stick at dawn and are the sunrise we see todya.  Tane cast a cloak of stars made by Wehi-nui-a-mamao with the important stars of Puaka, Matariki and Aotahi-ma-Rehua.
When summer dew and mists arrive we know that its Takinui remembering his beloved Papatuanuku.
